An emerging generation of young physicians brings diversity, adaptability and new communication strategies to the healthcare field.

Americans born from 1981 to 1996 now make up the majority of the workforce. As members of a new generation begin their careers in medicine, the face of the medical field is changing. Employing physicians from a variety of generations provides a range of vantage points, and millennial physicians offer many invaluable characteristics:

  • Diversity — 44% of U.S. medical school graduates in 2018 are of a minority background, and 61% of physicians under the age of 35 are female.
  • Tech-savvy — Millennials are typically familiar with all forms of technology, such as EHRs and digital diagnostic tools. Staffing service Weatherby Healthcare recommends attracting newer physicians with the right technology to help them interact with patients and meet productivity goals.
  • Eager to learn — Open to training, guidance and new processes, millennials can be easy to mentor and work with, according to Weatherby Healthcare.

Hiring Strategies

After watching family members experience burnout, millennials tend to seek a better work-life balance, according to Arun Saini, MD, writing for Medical News Today. Shift the focus from salary negotiations, and instead attract younger physicians with flexible schedules, ample paid time off and local opportunities for advancement or entertainment.
